At Waaberi Counseling, I believe that everyone deserves to lead a happy and fulfilling life. I understand having to attend counseling and putting your trust in someone you don't know can be anxiety provoking . I also understand the courage it takes to seek therapy for yourself or/and loved one. I want to create a safe environment that honors your beliefs, values and help guide you to be your whole self.
I understand and value the importance of working with someone who looks like you, who can relate to your identity and lived experience. I am patient, compassionate, direct and love connecting with individuals.
My philosophy is rooted in the belief of emotional well-being are integral to overall health, and that therapy can be a powerful tool for achieving this balance.
I am a bilingual Somali/English and bicultural woman who immigrated to the states as a refugee from Somalia decades ago due to the civil war. My family settled in Georgia where I went to high school and college. I moved to the Pacific NW over a decade ago to attend graduate school and have been here after graduating. I am a mom of teens and have a child with a disability. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cooking, watching movies, shows and TikTok. My happy place and where I feel most at peace and grounded is by the ocean/coast.
The name of my practice "Waaberi" means "dawn" is inspired by the town I grew up in Somalia.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been in the field of social services/social work and counseling for two decades. I worked with refugees and immigrants from all over the world. I also worked with children and teens for a few years as a school based therapist and love working with them. For the past few years, my focus has been working with BIPOC teens and adults.
I provide individual counseling to adults, youth, children and families from different backgrounds and identities. In my private practice my focus is working with people from the global majority (BIPOC), refugees and immigrant adults.
Services I provide include assessment and individual counseling. I also provide clinical supervision to individuals working towards their license. I believe in the principle of client self-determination; and I use a humanistic, strengths-based, and client-centered approach with everyone I work with.
My approach to therapy is rooted in empathy, compassion, and non-judgment. I strive to create a safe and supportive environment that is trauma informed, where individuals feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and feelings, and develop the skills and tools they need to thrive. I am trained in multiple modalities and use eclectic approach. In my practice, what I value the most is building trusting relationships.
