At Waaberi Counseling, my mission is to empower individuals to lead fulfilling and joyful lives. I acknowledge that seeking counseling and entrusting your well-being to a professional can be daunting, especially when you are unfamiliar with them. However, I recognize the courage it takes to reach out for therapy, whether for yourself or a loved one. My goal is to create a nurturing and supportive environment that respects your beliefs, values, and guides you towards becoming the authentic version of yourself.
I recognize the significance of working with counselors who share similar backgrounds and identities, fostering a sense of connection and understanding. I am patient, compassionate, direct, and thrive on building meaningful connections with individuals.
My philosophical foundation lies in the belief that emotional well-being is fundamental to overall health, and that therapy can be a transformative tool in achieving a harmonious balance between these two aspects.
As a bilingual Somali-English bicultural woman, I am a refugee from Somalia who immigrated to the United States decades ago due to the ongoing civil war. My family settled in Georgia, where I attended high school and college. Over a decade ago, I relocated to the Pacific Northwest to pursue graduate studies and have since made this my permanent residence. I am a mother of teenagers and have a child with a disability. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, engaging in culinary pursuits, watching movies, television shows, and TikTok content. My sanctuary and source of tranquility are the ocean and coastal areas.
The name of my practice, “Waaberi,” translates to “dawn” in Somali, drawing inspiration from the town where I was born and raised.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with two decades of experience in the social services and social work field, I have had the privilege of working with refugees and immigrants from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, I have dedicated several years to counseling children and adolescents as a school and community based therapist, and I find great joy in supporting their development. In recent years, my professional focus has shifted to supporting BIPOC teens and adults.
I offer individual counseling services to adults, youth, children, and families from diverse backgrounds and identities. In my private practice, my primary focus is on working with individuals from the global majority, particularly refugees, immigrant, BIPOC teens and adults.
My services encompass assessment and individual counseling. Additionally, I provide clinical supervision to individuals working to obtain their professional licenses. I adhere to the principle of client self-determination and employ a humanistic, strengths-based, and client-centered approach in all my interactions with clients.
My therapeutic approach is grounded in empathy, compassion, and non-judgment. I endeavor to establish a secure and supportive setting that is trauma-informed, fostering an environment where individuals feel at ease in exploring their thoughts and emotions. Furthermore, I facilitate their development of the necessary skills and resources to achieve personal growth and fulfillment. I possess training in various therapeutic modalities and employ an eclectic approach to cater to diverse client needs. In my practice, I place the utmost importance on cultivating trusting relationships with my clients.
